  • Income increased $800-$1000 per month
  • Google Pagerank increased from PR4 to PR5
  • 25 joint ventures
  • 5,000+ downloads

The Company
ScriptForSale.com was created by writer/producer Hal Croasmun to assist screenwriters to understand the Hollywood market and improve their craft. Hal interviewed 50 Hollywood producers at Disney, Warner Brothers, Sony, and Paramount Studios to discover exactly what it takes to write and sell screenplays to the largest production companies in the world. ScriptForSale.com provides eleven screenwriting classes, as well as articles and interviews about "the Biz."

Why VMT
ScriptForSale.com faces many challenges in a very competitive market and VMT presented an opportunity to be unique. "When I first saw VMT, I immediately envisioned the potential," Hal explains, "I saw it as a way to stay in front of our potential customers instead of having them just visit our site and forget about us."

The Method

The most important part of the entire process for any VMT version is creating content. ScriptForSale.com followed three simple steps to create their VMT content and prepare to market it.

  1. Identified a key need for their customers
  2. Created a list of solutions they could deliver as message content
  3. Approached other sites in their industry who also wanted to provide solutions for that key need.

"Our first objective was to look for an important problem our customers had." Hal continues, "In our case, we work with screenwriters, and their biggest problem is how to get Hollywood agents and producers to read their work."

Identifying your target market's concerns is a big step in creating a plan for addressing them. To connect well with their potential customers, ScriptForSale.com chose to present "33 Ways to Break Into Hollywood."

"First, we made a list of solutions that we already knew," Hal describes, "then, we called up writers who had already succeeded and asked them how they did it. Within a few days, we had our set of messages for VMT."

Hal was able to keep content in perspective. No matter how valuable the messages were, people would not appreciate being constantly sold to. "I think it's crucial to address a problem that is truly important to your customers," he explains. "We did no selling in our VMT content. Our objective was to provide them with the most valuable set of solutions we possibly could."

Leaving straight sales pitches out of the messages paid off. Hal clarifies, "It made a big difference. This established us as a 'solution provider' and that makes it easier for potential customers to make 'Yes' decisions."

Planning
Hal had a very unique vision for promoting VMT. Instead of promoting it alone, ScriptForSale.com had 25 joint venture partners that promoted "33 Ways to Break Into Hollywood" for free. "We wanted to use VMT as a way of attracting joint venture partners and customers at the same time," he explains, "David was extremely helpful and assisted us in designing a way to have graphic ads with every single tip." According to Hal, the need for a Flagship version of VMT was absolutely essential in this situation. "This made it very attractive to our joint venture partners."

The "33 Ways to Break Into Hollywood" Flagship VMT version illustrates the great flexibility available in VMT's design. The thumbnails above represent the first three messages. By rolling over each thumbnail, you'll be able to see that from one message to the next a new graphic appears next to the message. This rotating image technique was crucial to the success of ScriptForSale.com's efforts in obtaining joint ventures.

Completing the tasks of keeping website visitors and subscribers happy was equally smooth. "Structurally, setting this up was simple. We offer them '33 Ways to Break Into Hollywood' and an opportunity to join our free membership. Some choose the membership and some just download VMT - either choice is beneficial to us because both keep us in the forefront of our customer's minds and hearts."

Pitch
The next task was something that would be referred to as "The Pitch" in screen-writing parlance. ScriptForSale.com had to make other businesses aware of the joint venture opportunity. "We approached 25 other companies in our industry and exchanged a graphic ad in our VMT version for them putting up a banner on their site and an ad in their newsletter."

This free exchange allowed ScriptForSale.com to quickly engage in over two-dozen joint ventures with just one marketing project - VMT. "Essentially," added Hal, "we used VMT to establish strong relationships with 25 different businesses and an especially valuable relationship with one of the largest companies in our industry."

Implementation

To make the task of approaching various companies easier, ScriptForSale.com illustrated the entire concept and spelled out all of the benefits of joint venture partnership on a special page of their website.

"All that extra marketing cost us absolutely nothing," Hal points out, "We had 25 sites advertising for us for free because of the uniqueness of this marketing approach."

Hal adds, "The thing that really surprised me was the level of excitement among the other businesses we approached. We were able to get one of the largest companies in our industry to join us. Almost every company we approached said 'Yes' to us and at the time we were a very small player."

The Results
The results of ScriptForSale.com utilizing VMT as part of it's marketing efforts are as outstanding as the planning and vision that helped form it's success. "Besides bringing in thousands of extra customers and increasing our income dramatically, VMT helped establish us as experts in our field," explains Hal.

Translating all of these benefits into numbers, he details, "In the first three months, it returned a 10 to 1 ROI and it's still going strong." He continues, "We have had an increase of at least $800 to $1000 a month because of VMT. 5,000 people have downloaded our '33 Ways' version, we've had 817 pass-arounds and our Google Page Rank went from PR4 to PR5 since it's release."

With 25 other websites promoting the "33 Ways" version of VMT, the abundance of links to ScriptForSale.com have created another benefit, "One result that surprised me was that we got a #1 spot on Google for the phrase, 'break into Hollywood', which is very common in our business."

ScriptForSale.com's Sponsor Promotion
ScriptForSale.com's #1 spot for "Break Into Hollywood" puts them above Turner Network Television and Amazon.com.

When asked whether his VMT version is still making an impact today, Hal clarifies, "Four months after our launch, our banner is still on 15 of those websites, so the promotion of '33 Ways to Break Into Hollywood' continues as we speak."

The measure of any marketing campaign comes down to how your business message is received by your target market. How have ScriptForSale.com's subscribers and users reacted to the "33 Ways to Break Into Hollywood" version of VMT?

"We've had hundreds of emails thanking us for '33 Ways to Break Into Hollywood'," states Hal, "The more interesting thing is that more writers have been willing to immediately take our most expensive program instead of starting with our least expensive program."

Closing
The "33 Ways to Break Into Hollywood" version of VMT has been quite a success. With a smart vision, disciplined promotion, and expertly crafted content, ScriptForSale.com has become a bigger player in the screenwriting industry, "For many years, we've taught screenwriting classes, but up until this point, our small company was an unknown to 99% of the market we service."

With more than 5,000 downloads, increased sales, increased traffic, and plenty of joint ventures, VMT has played it's part perfectly in helping with ScriptForSale.com's successes. Summarizing his experience with VMT, Hal comments, "I highly recommend this marketing strategy. Once you've set up VMT, it just keeps attracting customers, building your credibility, and increasing your income."
